Just read your entire posts on this blog and have come to conclusion you are ace. Found ‘here’ through twitter and @custodysergeant, and some recent tweets of yours. Those tweets have been rumbling around in my mind and I wanted to reply somehow but couldn’t using twitter. The thing that got me going was reading all you have to say then reading retweet of a Sussex policewomans advice for female NYE revellers. I do understand that she was trying to help, but as someone who has been raped and also suffered sexual abuse, that comment wasn’t a helpful bit of advice to keep myself safe, it was a warning not to expect to get help from police if anything goes horribly wrong. There are probably many thousands of people like me who are very cynical about the way the police have dealt with them, and for good reason, which is why the message that officer sent out was SO bad, it only supports the worst we’ve experienced. My view is, men need to be taught that other people are not theirs to use as they see fit, and the perpetrators of these crimes are not monsters, but ordinary people, who you meet every day, and they need help to understand WHY what they’ve done is wrong and how to change (and punishment for crime committed). Of course women need to look after themselves too, but the main message needs to be to men. That’s what I would make the main focus of my twitter campaign. Just to end on something not entirely negative, I’m aware that attitudes in police are changing, and can’t expect police to be more enlightened than society at large, so best wishes and support to the officers who are striving to make the changes.

    • I am so sorry I have only just seen this. Thank you very much for reading. I am sorry to hear about your experience and I do hope you are on the road to recovery. I agree it was a poorly written tweet and that was rectified immediately. The officer in question was very upset they had offended people and is far more careful in tweeting advice now.
I do hope the police will continue to strive for better care of all. Best wishes and thank you for reading x
